High surf advisory for east-facing shores on Big Island on Friday, Saturday

The National Weather Service issued a high surf advisory for the east-facing shores of Hawaiʻi Island from Upolu Point in North Kohala through Cape Kumukahi in Puna to South Point in Kaʻu from 6 a.m. on Friday through 6 p.m. on Saturday.

The forecast calls for southeast winds to strengthen and maintain through the weekend. Local wind waves and upstream swell generated by a strong high pressure system will bring surf above advisory levels through Saturday.

Surf is expected to be 8 to 12 feet.

• Expect strong breaking waves, shore break and rip currents making swimming difficult and dangerous.

• Beach-goers, swimmers and surfers should heed all advice given by ocean safety officials; when in doubt, don’t go out.

Hawaiʻi County officials said there are no beach closures at this time, but be aware that beaches may close without notice.
