Update: Big Island flood watch beginning Thursday morning

Updated on Feb. 15: The National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch for the Big Island beginning Thursday morning and running through Saturday.  Heavy rain, gusty winds and lightning are forecast.

The flash flood watch covers the entire Island; but the Kaʻu, Puna and Hilo Districts are the most at risk.

Due to the flash flood watch, the following are issued:

• All residents in flood prone areas should prepare their property for flooding and should remain alert for flooding conditions.
• Be aware that outdoor events may be cancelled with little to no warning.
• For your safety, the Waipiʻo Valley Road will close this evening and remain closed through Sunday for everyone except Waipiʻo Valley residents and farmers.
• The Hele-On Park & Ride in Hilo will relocate from Kamehameha Avenue to Kuawa Street Wednesday night through Monday morning.

Original post: A flood watch issued by the National Weather Service is in effect through Saturday morning for all the main Hawaiian Islands.

A kona low is expected to bring widespread heavy rainfall to the Hawaiian Islands from Thursday into the weekend. The threat for heaviest rainfall will begin Thursday for the Big Island and then spread to the remaining islands as well Thursday night through Saturday. Heavy rainfall rates for an extended amount of time are expected to result in flash flooding, particularly over already saturated areas.

Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible and significant flooding may occur due to the overflow of streams and drainages. Roads in several areas may be closed, along with property damage in urban or low lying spots due to runoff. Landslides may also occur in areas with steep terrain.

A flood watch means that conditions are favorable for flash
flooding. Flash flooding is life threatening.
