Update: Winter weather advisory cancelled for Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea summits

Updated at 3 p.m on Feb. 6: The National Weather Service has cancelled the winter weather advisory.

Original post: Moisture moving in from the east and southeast will extend to the summits of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea on Big Island overnight, according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures on the mountains’ summits will be below freezing. While snow up to two inches is possible, freezing rain may be the primary hazard.

With these forecasted conditions in mind, the National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for the summits of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea beginning at 8 p.m. today. The advisory will continue through noon on Monday, Feb. 6.

A Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of snow, sleet, or freezing rain will cause travel difficulties. Drivers should use caution and be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibilities.

Travel could be very difficult to impossible as summit roadways may become icy. Visibility will be significantly reduced at times.
