Big Island police didn’t get a holiday from protecting the island’s roadways from people who drive under the influence of an intoxicant during the week before Christmas. The Hawai‘i Police Department reports that 17 motorists were arrested for DUI during the week of Dec. 19-25.
Five of those drivers were involved in traffic accidents. Four of them were younger than 21 years old. So far this year, there have been 965 DUI arrests compared with 1,057 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8.7%.
There have been 829 major accidents so far this year compared with 801 during the same period last year, an increase of 3.5%. To date in 2022, there have been 32 fatal crashes resulting in 34 fatalities compared with 26 fatal crashes resulting in 26 fatalities by this point last year. That represents increases of 23.1% for fatal crashes and 30.8% for fatalities.
