California Visitor Indicted on Attempted Murder Charge Following Stabbing at Resort

A tourist was indicted with various charges including attempted murder by the Hawai‘i County Office of the Prosecuting Attorney.

Richard Lopez, 65, of San Pedro, Calif., was arrested following an incident on Sept. 1 at the Waikoloa Beach Marriot Resort where he is accused of stabbing and slashing his 64-year-old girlfriend numerous times to her face and neck.

Lopez was initially charged in District Court on charges of second-degree attempted murder, second-degree assault, first-degree assault and abuse of a household member. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for today, however, prosecutors filed an indictment against Lopez for the same charges on Tuesday.

Prosecutors have also provided notice of an intention to seek a mandatory prison term in relation to imprisonment for offenses against the elderly.

Initially held on $300,000 bail, the indictment requests the 65-year-old be held on $500,000.
