Autopsy Results Reveal Child Killed in Shooting Incident Suffered Single Gunshot Wound

Update: Hawai‘i Police have identified the child killed in the shooting incident that occurred at the Camp Honokāia Boy Scout Camp, near Honoka‘a, on Sunday afternoon, as 12-year-old Manuel “Manny” Carvalho.

Autopsy results on a 12-year-old boy who died following a shooting incident over the weekend revealed the child suffered from a single gunshot wound.

The incident occurred at Camp Honokāia Boy Scout Camp, near Honoka‘a on Sunday, Aug. 28. Hawai‘i Police Department’s Hāmākua patrol officers responded to the camp on a report of an unconscious child following a shooting incident. Interviews with children and adults that were present are ongoing. This case is currently classified as a coroner’s inquest.

At this time, police do not suspect foul play in the 12-year-old boy’s death. The victim’s identity is being withheld at this time pending further investigation.

The Boy Scouts of America confirmed the minor killed was a BSA registered youth in the Aloha Council. The reported accidental discharge of a firearm occurred while on a Troop activity.

“The Hawai‘i Police Department is conducting a coroner’s inquest and the Aloha Council is fully cooperating,” BSA stated in an email to Big Island Now on Monday. “The investigation is ongoing. The BSA will have further comment as the investigation confirms details of this tragedy.”

BSA also extends its sincere condolences to the family of the victim, Troop members and the Aloha Council.
