The Aloha Theatre is presenting two free showings of the original documentary “Waterman” on July 9.
The film details the journey of five‐time Olympic medalist and Native Hawaiian Duke Paoa Kahanamoku as he shattered records and brought surfing to the world while overcoming a lifetime of personal challenges. “Waterman” explores his journey and legacy as a legendary swimmer, trailblazer, and the undisputed father of modern‐day surfing.
The original documentary by Sidewinder Films and The Foundation for Global Sports Development is directed by Isaac Halasima and features commentary from surfing’s biggest stars, while delving into Duke’s personal successes, struggles and humanitarianism through rare footage, contemporary visuals and incisive interviews. Bring the whole ‘ohana to Kainaliu on Saturday, July 9 to watch either the 4:30 p.m. or 7:30 p.m. free screening at the Aloha Theatre. Concessions will be available for purchase.

“Waterman” kicks off a summer of Polynesian and Native Hawaiian moʻolelo all about water. “Disney’s Moana Jr” will be brought to life with local talent singing and dancing onstage, opening July 22. Auditions for the stage play “Eddie Would Go,” about the legendary Eddie Aikau, will be happening July 25 and 26.
