17 Motorists Arrested For DUI

Big Island police continue their crackdown on motorists who drive under the influence of an intoxicant.

During the week of May 30-June 5, police arrested 17 motorists for DUI. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic accident. One of the drivers was younger than 21.

So far this year, there have been 461 DUI arrests compared with 527 during the same period last year, a decrease of 12.5%.

There have been 332 major accidents so far this year compared with 342 during the same period last year, a decrease of 2.9%.

To date, there have been 14 fatal crashes on Big Island roadways in 2022, including one fatal crash reclassified on May 30 because of a medical condition, resulting in 16 fatalities, compared with 11 fatal crashes, resulting in 11 fatalities, during the same time frame last year. This represents an increase of 27.3% for fatal crashes and 45.5% for fatalities.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
