24 Motorists Arrested For DUI

Big Island police continue their crackdown on motorists who drive under the influence of an intoxicant.

During the week of May 23-29, police arrested 24 motorists for DUI. Six were involved in traffic accidents. Two of the drivers were younger than 21.

So far this year, there have been 444 DUI arrests compared with 511 during the same period last year, a decrease of 13.11%.

There have been 318 major accidents so far this year compared with 325 during the same period last year, a decrease of 2.15%.

To date, there have been 15 fatal crashes on Big Island roadways in 2022, resulting in 17 fatalities, compared with 11 fatal crashes, resulting in 11 fatalities, during the same time period last year. This represents is an increase of 36.36% for fatal crashes and 54.55% for fatalities.

Police said DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
