15 Motorists Arrested for Driving Under the Influence

Big Island police continue their crackdown on motorists who drive under the influence of an intoxicant.

During the week of April 11-17, police arrested 15 motorists for DUI. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents. Two of the drivers were younger than 21.

There have been 323 DUI arrests so far this year compared with 377 during the same period last year, a decrease of 14.3%. There have been 217 major accidents so far this year compared with 237 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8.4%.

There have been 10 fatal crashes, resulting in 12 fatalities, on Big Island roadways to date this year compared with eight fatal crashes, resulting in eight fatalities, during the same time period last year. This represents an increase of 25% for fatal crashes and 50% for fatalities.

Police said DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
