Big Island police continue their crackdown on motorists who drive under the influence of an intoxicant in an effort to make the island’s roadways more safe.
During the week of April 4-10, 22 motorists were arrested for DUI, according to media release from the Hawai‘i Police Department. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents.
So far this year, there have been 308 DUI arrests compared with 349 during the same period last year, a decrease of 11.8%. There have been 197 major accidents so far this year compared with 223 during the same period last year, a decrease of 11.7%.
To date, there have been 10 fatal crashes on Big Island roadways this year, resulting in 12 fatalities, compared with eight fatal crashes, resulting in eight fatalities, for the same time period last year. This represents is an increase of 25% for fatal crashes and 50% for fatalities.

Police said DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
