Big Island police continue their pursuit of making the island’s roadways safe from motorists who drive under the influence of an intoxicant.
During the week of March 28-April 3, police reported in a media release that 17 motorists were arrested for DUI. Two of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents and two were younger than 21.
So far this year, there have been 286 DUI arrests compared with 326 during the same period last year. This is a decrease of 12.3%.
There have been 187 major accidents so far this year compared with 196 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4.6%.

To date, there have been 10 fatal crashes, resulting in 12 fatalities, compared with seven fatal crashes, resulting in seven fatalities, for the same time period last year, an increase of 42.9% for fatal crashes and 71.4% for fatalities.
Police said DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
