22 Motorists Arrested For DUI

Big Island police continue their crackdown on motorists who drive under the influence of an intoxicant in an effort to make the island’s roadways safer.

According to a media release from the Hawai’i Police Department, during the week of March 7-13, police arrested 22 motorists for DUI. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents. One of the drivers was younger than 21.

So far this year, there have been 235 DUI arrests compared with 251 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.4%.

There have been 147 major accidents so far this year compared with 151 during the same period last year, a decrease of 2.6%.

To date, there have been seven fatal crashes, resulting in nine fatalities, compared with five fatal crashes, resulting in five fatalities, for the same time last year. This represents is an increase of 40% for fatal crashes and 80% for fatalities.

Police said that DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
