Video: Fire at Hilo Transfer Station Not Suspicious

Hawaiʻi Fire Chief Kazuo Todd said the blaze in the Hilo Transfer Station’s sorting warehouse on Thursday is not suspicious at this time.

“Trash fires are not that uncommon due to what is placed in the trash,” Todd told Big Island Now this morning.

Hawaii police first reported the fire at 6:17 p.m., advising anyone with respiratory problems to avoid Leilani Street in the area of the transfer station warehouse.

By about 9 p.m., the fire was extinguished and the smoke cleared.
