Public Libraries to Reopen Wednesdays
As COVID-19 case counts continue to decline throughout the state, agencies, businesses and other organizations are making changes in an effort to open up more — and that includes the state’s public libraries.
The Hawai‘i State Public Library System announced in a news release that public library branches will reopen on Wednesdays beginning March 2. The Wednesday closures were instituted in August 2021 because of the high infection rates of the Delta and Omicron variants.
“We appreciate the patience of our patrons as we navigate the challenges of the pandemic, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back into our libraries on Wednesdays,” said State Librarian Stacey Aldrich.
And while they will once again be open on Wednesdays, as state facilities, all public libraries must continue to comply with state health mandates, which require patrons and visitors 12 and older to:
- Present proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test issued within the past 72 hours.
- Wear a mask while indoors.
- Practice physical distancing.
- Follow basic guidelines for being safe — staying home if you are sick, washing hands and using hand sanitizer.
- Patrons can also enjoy virtual access to library resources.
The HSPLS digital doors are always open online. With just a library card, patrons can download ebooks, stream movies, learn a language, read The New York Times and more!
