HVNP Announces February Flight Operations

Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park announces upcoming flight operations for February.

Management of the park requires the use of aircraft to monitor and research volcanic activity, conduct search-and-rescue missions and law enforcement operations, support management of natural and cultural resources and maintain backcountry facilities.

The schedule of operations is as follows:

• Between 8 and 9 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, for endangered plant recovery in Kahuku between 3,500 and 7,500 feet in elevation.
• Between 9 and 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, for fountain grass control and mapping from Kamoʻoaliʻi to Keauhou from sea level to 3500 feet in elevation.
• Between 8 and 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2, for crew support sling loads in ʻŌlaʻa Tract between 3,500 and 4,500 feet in elevation.
• Between 7 and 10 a.m. Feb. 10 for vegetation monitoring support in ʻŌlaʻa Tract between 3,500 and 4,500 feet in elevation.
• Between 7 and 9 a.m. Feb. 22 for crew support sling loads between Mauna Ulu and Escape Road between 3,000 and 4,000 feet in elevation.

In addition, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory might conduct flight operations over Kīlauea and Mauna Loa to assess volcanic activity and maintain instrumentation.

The park regrets any noise impact to residents and park visitors. Dates and times are subject to change based on aircraft availability and weather.
