West Hawai‘i County Band to Present Free Concert

Start the New Year off on the right foot — tapping along to music.

The West Hawai’i County Band, a 20-piece community and civic band primarily comprised of community members, will present its first free concert of 2022 at 4 p.m. Jan. 22 at the West Hawai’i Civic Center gazebo. The band will perform an hour of live music for the community’s enjoyment.

In a return to times past, the band will present Sousa marches such as “The Black Horse Troop,” traditional Hawaiian tunes including “Pagan Love,” a song arranged for the Palace Band by Bud Dant and jazzy tunes such as the famous “Peter Gunn” theme by Henry Mancini and “Harlem Nocture” recorded by the likes of Duke Ellington.

The band will be led by guest director Richard Shields.

This concert series is brought to the community in part by the county Parks and Recreation Department and the West Hawai’i County Band Friends.

The band’s repertoire includes march favorites, traditional brass band music, big band tunes and traditional Hawaiian tunes.
