Puna Man Pleads Guilty to Drug Offenses, Sentenced to Federal Prison

A Puna man was sentenced to more than nine years in federal prison for a variety of drug charges, including conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine.

On Monday, Nov. 1, 46-year-old Maximillian Oleksiak appeared before US District Court Judge Helen Gillmor. Oleksiak pleaded guilty in September to conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine and two counts of attempted possession of 50 grams or more methamphetamine with intent to distribute.

Offenses stem from incidents that occurred between April 1 and May 27, 2020, and Jan. 11, 2018.

“Our Office will continue to promote and encourage coordination between local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies to hold drug dealers accountable and prioritize the prosecution of the distribution of methamphetamine in our community,” said Hawai‘i County Prosecuting Attorney Kelden Waltjen. “These investigations and prosecution were the result of a combined effort by members of the Hawai‘i Police Department’s Area I and II VICE Sections, US Department of Homeland Security Investigations, Hawai‘i County Prosecutors, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office.”

Gillmor also ordered that Oleksiak be placed on five years of supervision following his 110-month sentence.
