Pāhoa Resident Suffers Minor Injuries While Evacuating Structure Fire

A Pāhoa resident was treated for minor injuries after self-evacuating from a structure fire Wednesday, Nov. 3.

Hawaiʻi Fire Department responded to the blaze at 9:03 a.m. on the 16-2100 block of Sandalwood Drive. When crews arrived on scene, they found the first floor of a two-story home 20-30% involved with fire.

According to an HFD press release, a Hawaiʻi police officer was already on scene with the resident. HFD officials say the resident was later taken to Hilo Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries.

Firefighters attacked the flames from the outside and knocked down the fire. After the fire was put out, the release states, crews moved through the structure and removed smoke. No fire appeared to extend beyond the first floor.

No rescue was needed and no other exposures were affected by the fire.

Hawaiian Electric also responded to the home where they disconnected power from the residence. The scene was turned over to fire inspectors for further investigation.

The cause of the blaze is unknown at this time.

HFD reports an estimated loss of $122,500.
