Popular Big Island Trail, Campground to Close for Regular Upkeep

A popular trail and campground will close for routine maintenance later this month.

Muliwai trail and Waimanu campground will be shut down to all users between Nov. 15-18 to allow DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW)’s regular upkeep of the area, which include maintaining proper function of the Clivus composting toilets, litter pickup, removing fallen trees, and clearing landslides and use of herbicide to control invasive plants.

This trail and campground are closed and maintained about four times a year. Visit the state’s camping website for the latest information on the reopening.

As a reminder, the road into Waipiʻo Valley is closed to all users every third Wednesday each month due to ongoing rockfall mitigation work, between the hours of approximately 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Hikers to or from the Muliwai Trail and Waimanu Campsites will not be allowed to use the road on these days.
