Kona Woman in Critical Condition Following Early Morning S. Kohala Crash

A Kailua-Kona woman is in critical condition after a single-vehicle crash in South Kohala early this morning.

Hawaii Police responded to the crash at 5:24 a.m. on Highway 190 near mile marker 7. According to authorities, the 26-year-old woman was traveling north in a gold 2007 Honda Accord when for an unknown reason she crossed the double solid yellow line and lost control.

“The vehicle then struck several rocks, ejecting the driver who was not wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash,” police stated.

The woman was transported to North Hawaiʻi Community Hospital and later flown to Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu, where she is currently listed in critical condition.

Police believe that speed and impairment are possible factors in the crash.

This crash comes on the heels of Wednesday’s motorcyclist fatality on Daniel K. Inouye Highway. The Hawai‘i Police Department is strongly encouraging motorists to drive safely this Halloween holiday weekend.

The Department will be out in force this weekend strictly enforcing traffic laws and DUI checkpoints will be set up around the island.
