Storage Shed Fire in Lava Tree State Park Suspected as Arson

A storage shed found smoldering within the Lava Tree State Park this morning, Oct. 19, is being investigated as arson.

Hawaiʻi Fire Department responded to the park at approximately 6:12 a.m. on a report of a structure fire. When crews arrived on scene, they found a 15-foot-by-20-foot shed in a smoldering/decay stage. The roof was still standing but the purlins and rafters were completely burnt.

The building was a hollow tile storage shed with a metal roof. There was no electricity or other utility services noted.

“The structure front door was already open with obvious forced entry prior to our arrival,” HFD stated in a press release this morning.

Fire officials say it appears to be a crime scene with arson as the cause. Hawaiʻi Police Department and fire inspectors were notified.

The total loss was approximately $10,000.
