Mag.-4.6 Earthquake Rumbles Southwest Rift Zone of Kīlauea

A magnitude 4.6 earthquake rumbled the southwest rift zone of Kīlauea volcano Tuesday night, Oct. 5, 2021.
According to the US Geological Survey, the quake was recorded approximately 5.5 miles east-northeast of Pāhala at 8:37 p.m. USGS reported an aftershock quake, measured at magnitude 3.2, a few minutes after the first one struck.
No tsunami is expected, according to the National Weather Service in Honolulu.
Kīlauea is currently erupting. As of Sept. 30, 2021, several vents have opened up within the Halemaʻumaʻu crater. Lava is contained to the lava lake within the crater.
