A Hilo man is facing theft charges after reportedly stealing avocadoes at the Hilo Farmer’s Market.
The incident occurred on Sept. 4. According to court documents, 30-year-old Colin Kerrigan attempted to take the produce valued at more than $100. Charges were filed in Hilo District Court on Monday, Sept. 6.
Kerrigan was charged with second-degree theft, a class C felony, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison. Since the 30-year-old has a prior conviction of first-degree burglary, Kerrigan faces a mandatory prison term if convicted as charged.

Kerrigan appeared in Hilo District Court on Tuesday, Sept. 7, where the defense requested Kerrigan be granted supervised release. Over the objection by the state, Judge Jeffrey Hawk granted the request.
A preliminary hearing was scheduled for Sept. 21.
Kerrigan is also facing felony drug charges for an unrelated matter.
