Rep. Lowen to Host Talk Story on End of Eviction Moratorium and Next Steps

Rep. Nicole Lowen has scheduled a virtual talk story to discuss the end of the eviction moratorium and what the next steps are for tenants and landlords who owe or are owed back rent.

The moratorium was in place for 16 months during the COVID-19 pandemic but ended in August. However, the Hawaiʻi State Legislature passed a new law this past session that requires mandatory mediation for landlords and tenants before court eviction proceedings can begin.

Lowen wants to talk with West Hawaiʻi residents about that process and available rental assistance. She will host a talk story on Wednesday, Sept. 15, which will include panelists: Vice-Chair of the Housing Committee Rep. Troy Hashimoto, experts from the West Hawaiʻi Mediation Center, the Legal Aid Society of Hawaiʻi and Hawaiʻi Community Lending.

Presentations will be followed by a brief opportunity for Q&A.
