The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a red flag warning for the Big Island, which is in effect until 6 pm Thursday due to the presence of gusty winds and low humidity in leeward areas.

Leeward portions of all Hawaiian Islands will be under the warning, as trade winds will register at up to 20 mph with locally higher gusts. Humidity is also forecasted at 40-45% through the afternoon hours.

A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring, or will be shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.

This warning does not predict new fire starts. However, any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is not recommended.
