On Tuesday, Hawaii County Civil Defense reported that 40 people on the Big Island were hospitalized as a result of COVID-19 infection — the highest total since the start of the pandemic. By Wednesday, that number had increased more than 50% to 62 hospitalizations.
For the second consecutive day, the Big Island reported exactly 100 new cases. Currently, a total of 1,698 infections are active island-wide.
Widespread community-based transmission of COVID-19 has been prevalent across all counties for several weeks.
The Hawaiʻi Department of Health reported 625 new COVID-19 cases Wednesday, bringing the statewide total to 57,747. Eight new COVID-related deaths were also reported.

The state’s two-week average is now 687 new cases daily, with a test positivity rate of 8.3%. Both figures have continued to rise for multiple weeks.
A total of 3,251 individuals have been hospitalized as a result of COVID-19 infection since the pandemic began, while at least 573 have died.
