Police Pursuit Ends in Waters of Kailua Bay
A Hawai´i County Police Department (HPD) pursuit through Kailua-Kona took place over land and sea before ultimately resulting in an arrest.
Officers arrested and charged 25-year-old Lane Turner, of Captain Cook, on Aug. 16, 2021, for an outstanding bench warrant. He was also wanted for questioning regarding several burglaries, according to HPD Public Affairs Specialist Denise Laitinen.
The department said that an officer made contact with Turner on Kuakini Highway on Monday afternoon. Both the officer and Turner were on foot at the time of the encounter.
Turner reportedly ran from the officer and made his way to Ali‘i Drive, where he jumped in the ocean near Kailua Pier.
Officers retrieved the suspect, who by that point had swum a few hundred yards from shore. Several people aboard the Body Glove, a tour boat company that docks in Kailua Bay, captured video of the suspect’s apprehension by authorities.
Turner was taken into custody on the outstanding warrant for criminal contempt of court and remains in custody at this time.
