Hawai‘i Virus Cases Smashing Old Records Amid Unprecedented Surge
The Hawai‘i Department of Health reported 346 new cases of coronavirus statewide Wednesday, bringing the overall total to 43,962. No new COVID-related deaths were reported.
A total of 63 new cases were identified on the Big Island Wednesday, with 845 active cases and 21 individuals hospitalized. The increase in coronavirus cases has been expected with more travel and the arrival of the Delta variant in the Hawaiian Islands, though cases on the Big Island are rising faster than anywhere except O´ahu over the last several days.
The state’s two-week average is now 381 new cases daily, with a test positivity rate of 6.5%. A map documenting new cases by district across all islands can be accessed at the DOH website.

A total of 2,782 individuals have been hospitalized as a result of COVID-19 infection since the pandemic began, while at least 538 have died.
To date, a total of 1,767,912 doses of the vaccine have been administered statewide, with 60.4% of the population fully vaccinated and 67.4% having received at least one shot.
