COVID Emergency Extension for Expired Driver’s License Ends Aug. 6

The emergency extension related to COVID-19 for driver’s licenses, non-CDL permits, and state IDs which expired on or after March 16, 2020, ends Aug. 6, 2021.

Statewide, county DMVs are working to address the backlog of renewals. Offices in Hilo and Kona are accepting walk-ins for renewals. Those with appointments receive priority. All other offices will remain by appointment only.

On July 1, the Hawai‘i County Motor Vehicle Registration office stated they are currently four weeks behind in processing mail-in renewals. As a result, the DMV started to allow walk-ins for customers wishing to renew their expired vehicle registrations as well as those that have registrations set to expire within the next 30 days.

The Kona, Hilo and Waimea offices are open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Pāhoa office is open 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and the Ka‘ū office is open Tuesday through Wednesday by appointment only.

The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation encourages residents to prioritize these renewals to avoid future penalties. The REAL ID enforcement date has been extended to May 3, 2023.
