Kona Man Accused of Domestic Abuse Also Faces Similiar Charges in Family Court

A Kona man wanted after failing to appear in Family Court on domestic abuse charges is facing additional offenses after a domestic incident in the Hilo Walmart parking lot.

On Tuesday, April 27, Hawai‘i County Office of the Prosecuting Attorney announced they had filed charges against 37-year-old Grant Marshall after an incident on April 26. According Hawai‘i Police Department, Marshall was seen by bystanders in a physical altercation with a woman inside a van.

Officers attempted to stop the van from leaving the parking lot and the suspect refused to pull over. The vehicle was eventually stopped on Airport Road and the suspect was arrested.

In connection to the April 26 incident, Marshall was charged with first-degree robbery, kidnapping, abuse of a household member, first-degree unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, first-degree resisting an order to stop a motor vehicle, operating a vehicle while under the influence of an intoxicant and reckless driving.

Marshall is being held in lieu of $127,000 bail. The 37-year-old appeared in Hilo District court April 27, where bail was confirmed. The court granted the defense’s request to conduct an evaluation to determine if Marshall is fit to proceed. Doctors’ reports are due June 1.

Four days before the assault, Marshall was granted supervised release after he was brought in on charges of fourth-degree theft, third-degree promotion of a detrimental drug and resisting arrest. Charges stem from an incident that occurred on April 21 involving the same victim as the April 27 incident.

According to charging documents filed in Kona District Court, Marshall stole a vehicle from a woman, was in possession of three grams of marijuana and threatened physical force against a Hawai‘i Police officer attempting an arrest.

The prosecution had no objection to the defense’s request to grant Marshall supervised release. However, the Kona man was also wanted on an outstanding bench warrant for failure to appear in a Family Court case on March 10 where he is charged with two counts of abuse of a family household member.

The reported victim in the Family Court case appears to be the same individual involved in the District Court cases, documents indicate.
