Local Athletes Compete Virtually in Special Olympics
Special Olympics Hawaii is continuing to provide athletes the opportunity to train and compete safely online in their third statewide virtual competition: the Spring Fitness Classic. Today, 115 athletes and Unified partners from across the state competed from their own homes in the Spring Fitness Classic in a range of categories including Burpees, Push-ups, Reverse Crunches, and Side-to-Side Hops. There were also special events held for individuals with limited mobility or using wheelchairs including Shoulder Press, Double Bicep Curl, and Side-to-Side Twists. During the statewide virtual competition, Special Olympics Hawaii used Zoom breakout rooms allowing athletes to compete simultaneously in different divisions.
To qualify for the Spring Fitness Classic, athletes participated in area and regional competitions online throughout the month of March. Athletes trained every week by connecting with their coaches over Zoom and other virtual platforms. Volunteers and sponsors allow Special Olympics to continue to provide programs for local athletes free of charge.
