State Advises Emergency Prep in Wake of Tsunami Watch

The Hawai´i Emergency Management Agency (HIEMA) is advising those in low-lying areas across the state to begin emergency preparations after the National Weather Service issued a tsunami watch for all of Hawai´i.

A tsunami watch means that a tsunami may impact Hawai‘i, but the threat and potential impacts are still being determined.

A magnitude-8.1 earthquake occurred at 9:28 HST in the region of the Kermadec Islands, an area in the South Pacific roughly 600 miles NE of New Zealand.

The estimated time of earliest arrival of the first wave is 4:35 pm HST on Thursday, March 4. More information is expected within the hour.
