Ku‘ikahi Mediation Center will offer its annual “Basic Mediation Training” beginning Sept. 7. The four-day, 32-hour workshop will be led by two experienced mentor mediators, facilitators and trainers: Diane Petropulos, M.A. and Catherine Lampton, M.A.
The trainings will be on Saturdays and Sundays on Sept. 7, 8, 14 and 15, 2019, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Hilo.
Attendees will learn how to resolve conflicts and differences by using communication skills like active listening, summarizing and rephrasing, and asking open-ended questions. The workshop will help participants learn to communicate ore effectively in personal and professional settings, and become a better negotiator and problem-solver.

Those who complete the training will be eligible to apply to join Ku‘ikahi’s mediator apprenticeship program.
Instructor Petropulos has developed and conducted trainings throughout Hawai’i and is a former lecturer at the master’s level in the Human Resource Management Program at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. She has mediated hundreds of circuit, district and small claims court cases for Maui Mediation Services and currently serves on their Board of Directors.
Lampton is a principal at Mediation & More offering mediation, facilitation and training services since 2006. A graduate of University of Hawai‘i at Hilo and coordinator of the UH student mediation program, she earned her master’s degree in negotiation, conflict resolution and peace-building at California State University, Dominguez Hills. She is a PhD candidate in ethical and creative leadership and has mediated hundreds of circuit, district and small claims court cases for Ku’ikahi Mediation Center.

Tuition to attend the training is $325 and applications can be found online at Ku‘ikahi Mediation Center. Group discounts and individual needs-based scholarships are available. Preregistration is required.
