UPDATE: Flood Advisory Cancelled for Big Island

UPDATE: April 29, 2019, 8:48 p.m.

The Flood Advisory for Hawai‘i Island has been cancelled.

Weather radar showed that the heavy rain has moved offshore, therefore the Flood Advisory has been cancelled.

UPDATE: April 29, 2019, 6:06 p.m.

The National weather Service has extended the Flood Advisory for the Island of Hawai‘i until 9 p.m.

At 6:05 p.m., radar indicated areas of heavy rain over the windward and leeward coasts of the Big Island. The heaviest rain was located between Kailua-Kona and Upolu Point, where rainfall rates of around 2 inches per hour. Minor flooding of low lying and poor drainage areas can be expected.

Locations in the advisory include, but are not limited to Hilo, Kailua-Kona, Na‘alehu, Pa‘auilo, Waipio Valley, Orchidlands Estates, Kukuihaele, Hawi, Pepeekeo, Kea‘au, Honaunau and Kamuela.

UPDATE: April 29, 2019, 5:18 p.m.

Flood advisory for the Island of Hawaii has been extended until 8:15 PM.

At 5:13 p.m., radar indicated heavy rain across many coastal and lower slope areas across the northern two-thirds of the Big Island. Rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour continue in these
areas.

Locations in the advisory include but are not limited to Hilo, Kailua-Kona, Pa‘auilo, Waipio Valley, Orchidlands Estates, Kukuihaele, Hawi, Pepe‘ekeo, Kea‘au, Kamuela, Kawaihae and Honoka‘a.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Flood Advisory for the Island of Hawai‘i until 6 p.m.

At 3:04 p.m., radar indicated heavy rain over the northeast half of the Big Island. The most intense rainfall was along the leeward  Kohala slopes and over the slopes of the South Hilo District. This  rainfall is expected to continue through the afternoon and  diminish around sunset.

Locations in the advisory include but are not limited to Hilo, Kailua-Kona, Pa‘auilo, Waipio Valley, Orchidlands Estates, Hawi, Kea‘au, Waimea, Kawaihae, the Kohala Mountain Road, and the
Māmālahoa Highway between Waimea and Kalaoa.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS

• Stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding.
• Rainfall and runoff will also cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action.
• Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle, or on foot. Turn around, don’t drown.
