Flood Advisory Issued for Big Island
The National Weather Service in Honolulu issued a Flood Advisory for Hawai‘i Island on Sept. 12, 2018, at 2 p.m.
The advisory is in effect until 5 p.m.
At 1:58 p.m., radar showed that moderate to heavy rain has developed along the slopes of the South Kohala and North Kona Districts.
The highest rain rates were about one inch per hour along the Māmalahoa Highway between the Waikoloa Road junction and Kalaoa.
Locations in the advisory include but are not limited to Kailua-Kona, Pu‘uanahulu, Kamuela, Kainaliu, Waikoloa Village, Honalo, Kalaoa, Holualoa, Puako, Kealakekua and the Māmalahoa Highway between mile markers 10 and 32.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS
Stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding.
Rainfall and runoff will also cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action.
Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle, or on foot. Turn around, don’t drown.
This advisory may need to be extended beyond 5 p.m. if heavy rain persists.
A Flash Flood Watch is also in effect for Hawaii County through Thursday night.
