Hawai‘i Keeps an Eye on Tropical Storm Miriam

The National Weather Service Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida, issued the following information about Tropical Storm Miriam at 8 a.m. on Aug. 28, 2018, at 8 a.m.:

At 5 a.m., the center of Tropical Storm Miriam was located near latitude 14.2 north, longitude 135.4 west, about 1,355 miles ESE of Hilo.

Miriam is moving toward the west near 14 mph with no change in strength.

This motion is expected to continue through Wednesday.

If and when Miriam passes 140 W, the storm will have entered Central Pacific Hawaiian waters, and reports will come from NOAA’s National Weather Service in Honolulu. Aug. 28, 2018, 5 a.m. NOAA

A turn toward the NNW is expected Thursday and Friday.

Maximum sustained winds are near 65 mph with higher gusts. Some strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours, and Miriam is still expected to become a hurricane Wednesday or Wednesday night.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 70 miles from the center.

There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect.
