Construction Company Comes to the Aid of Stranded Honoka‘a Residents

One of the 10 Honoka‘a residents who were stranded by a hillside collapse due to heavy flooding resulting from Hurricane Lane on Friday, Aug. 24, 2018, reached out to Big Island Now for help.
Soon after the story was published, four Hawai‘i Police Department Officers made contact with stranded residents.

“They hiked all the way down here past the mudslide to check on us,” said Dan Jarvie.
Today, Saturday, Aug. 25, “thanks to the cooperation of the Hamakua Energy Partners and the awesome crew from DeRego’s Service LLC, we have a temporary solution to our access dilemma,” Jarvie said.
Jarvie had written in his email to Big Island Now that they had no way out because the landslide took out a bridge on Makalae Road on the way to the Haina fishing landing.
Jarvie said today that he wants to make sure to express his appreciation to the HPD for their quick response to their dire situation.
“Much respect and applause to the police department for coming to check on us.”

The Big Island is currently under a Flash Flood Warning until 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 25, and that may be extended if need be.
