UPDATE: Aug. 24, 5:30 p.m.: HPD Visits Honoka‘a Residents Stranded by Landslide
Just about an hour ago, four Hawai‘i Police Department Officers made contact with stranded Honoka‘a residents.
“They hiked all the way down here past the mudslide to check on us,” said stranded resident Dan Jarvie.

Jarvie expressed his appreciation to the HPD.
“Much respect and applause to the police department for coming to check on us.”

One of the stranded Honoka‘a residents, Dan Jarvie, contacted Big Island Now on Aug. 24, 2018, about his dire situation.
“Hey! Well we are at a private home in Honoka‘a south of the power plant,” Jarvie wrote in and email. The hillside collapsed and the gulch gave way. We have no way out and power plant owns property. We are certainly stuck here with no access to any main roads… the gulch gave way to the massive mud slide, the power lines are also now exposed.”

The landslide took out a bridge on Makalae Road on the way to the Haina fishing landing. There is one house at that location which is stranded.
As of 1:30 p.m., there are 10 people stranded in the area.
“The landslide happened last night sometime,” Jarvie said. “We have tried calling civil defense and the county, but right now everyone is saying to try calling the other.”
