Bayfront Highway Closed Due to Ponding

The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) continues to prepare for potential impacts of Hurricane Lane.

HDOT Highways Division is urging the public to make their hurricane preparations and stay off the roads during the anticipated arrival of high winds, heavy rains, and storm surge associated with tropical cyclones. As a reminder, contraflow lanes on all islands, including the Zipper lane, will not be open Thursday and Friday. The Freeway Service Patrol on O‘ahu will also not be running during the lead up and possible landfall of Hurricane Lane.

Out of an abundance of caution HDOT will be closing the following routes:

As of 9:15 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 22, Bayfront Highway (Highway 19) in Hilo was closed due to ponding on the road and both lanes Akoni Pule Highway (Route 270) reopened following a small landslide.

Pali Highway Kailua/Kaneohe bound lanes at Nu‘uanu Pali Drive from 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 23, 2018 until the storm passes and the road is assessed for potential rockfall threat.
Kuhio Highway between Wainiha and Waikoko after the 11 p.m. convoy Thursday, Aug. 23, 2018. Limited local access will resume after crews assess the slope for potential storm damage.

Motorists are asked to use caution or avoid unnecessary travel on coastal roads and roads prone to flooding or landslides.

HDOT Highways Division O‘ahu District is coordinating with the City and County of Honolulu Department of Emergency Management on staging of equipment at the H-3 Harano Tunnels. This will involve intermittent closures of the left lanes of both directions of the H-3 Freeway starting at 9 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 23, 2018, through Saturday, Aug. 25, 2018.

During staging at the Harano Tunnels the right lanes in both directions will be accessible. HDOT asks the public for their cooperation and patience as we work with our partners to prepare for Hurricane Lane.
