Saturday, July 7, 2018, 12:14 p.m.: Flood Advisory Extended, High Surf & Thunderstorm Advisory

A Flood Advisory is in effect until 3:15 p.m.

At 12:07 p.m. radar indicated separate areas of heavy rain
falling across the southern Puna District and leeward slopes in
and around Kailua-Kona.

Nearly stationary showers persist near and downwind of active volcanic fissures just west of Leilani Estates, mainly upslope of Highway 130.

Heavy showers have also developed
across South Kona slopes, with additional areas of heavy rainfall
forming near Waikoloa Village. Rain rates of up to 3 inches per
hour have been observed.

Locations in the advisory include but are not limited to Captain Cook, Pu‘uanahulu, Honaunau, Kahaluu-Keauhou, Kainaliu and
Pahoa and Kalapana.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS

Stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding.

Rainfall and runoff will also cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action.

Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle, or on foot. Turn around, don’t drown.

Noon: Flood, High Surf & Thunderstorm Advisory

The National Weather Service has issued a flood, high surf and thunderstorm advisory for the island of Hawai‘i.

The advisory remains in effect until 1:15 p.m. and may extend beyond if conditions persist.

Due to the potential thunderstorms, the following advisories are issued:
• Be aware of lightning; the best place to be is indoors.
• Expect possible interruptions in your utility services.
• Be on the alert for malfunctioning traffic signals. Please treat flashing traffic lights as a four-way stop.

It is advised to stay away from streams, drainage ditches, and low lying areas prone to flooding.

10:18 a.m.

The Flood advisory has been extended until 1:15 p.m. HST.

At 10:17 a.m., radar continued to show an area of nearly
stationary heavy showers over and downwind of the active volcanic
fissures near and just west of Leilani Estates in the southern
Puna District.

The heaviest showers were falling at rates of 1.5 to 3 inches per hour over Highway 130 just west of Leilani Estates.

Hawai‘i County Civil Defense reported minor flooding south of Leilani Estates along Kamaili Road.

Locations in the advisory include but are not limited to
Pāhoa and Kalapana.

7:18 a.m.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Flood Advisory for Hawai‘i County until 10:15 a.m.

At 7:13 a.m., radar indicated an area of nearly stationary heavy showers over and downwind of the active volcanic fissures near Leilani Estates in the southern Puna District.

The heaviest showers were falling at rates of 3 inches per hour over Highway 130 just west of Leilani Estates.

Locations in the advisory include but are not limited to Pāhoa and Kalapana.
