5 p.m.: Free Medical, Dental and Eye Care, June 22 & 23
Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reports that Fissure 8 continues to erupt with a full channel flowing to the ocean at Kapoho. Trade winds are pushing vog to the southwest.
Due to the current volcanic activity, the following policies are in effect:
- Highway 130 from Pāhoa to Kalapana Road is open only to residents with official credentials.
Residents of Hawai‘i County who suffered damage or losses from the recent Kīlauea volcanic eruption and earthquakes, can register for disaster assistance with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
The following is provided for your information:
- A Disaster Recovery Center or DRC, jointly operated by Hawaii County, the State of Hawaii, and FEMA is open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and is located at the Kea‘au High School Gym.
- FEMA, the U.S. Small Business Administration, and state and county government agencies will be present at the center.
- If you need a ride, buses will be running between the two shelters and the DRC between 7:30 a.m. and 9 p.m.
Free medical, dental and eye care will be available Friday, June 22 and Saturday, June 23 at “Tropic Care 2018” at Kea‘au High School between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Free breakfast and lunch will be available for children. Tropic Care is open to everyone, regardless of whether or not they are affected by the Kilauea eruption.
10 a.m.: No Overflows From Channel Observed
Fissure 8 continues building a tephra cone and producing a robust channelized lava flow on Kīlauea Volcano’s Lower East Rift Zone.
The eruption in the lower East Rift Zone (LERZ) continues with little change.
Lava fountains from the Fissure 8 spatter cone continue to feed the established channel that transports lava to the ocean at the Kapoho coastline. One main ocean entry on the south edge of the flow front at the coast is producing a laze plume that is being blown onshore. No overflows from the channel were observed this morning. Fissure 6 was weakly active overnight with at least one short flow active visible in the PGcam. Fissure 16/18 and 22 displayed some incandescence early this morning.
Pele’s hair and other lightweight volcanic glass fragments from the lava fountain at Fissure 8 continue to fall downwind of the fissure, dusting the ground within a few hundred yards of the vent. High winds may waft lighter particles to greater distances. Residents are urged to minimize exposure to these volcanic particles, which can cause skin and eye irritation similar to volcanic ash.
Kīlauea Volcano Summit
Seismicity at the summit increased overnight with 30 to 35 events per hour by daybreak. Several earthquakes were felt in the Volcano area. Inward slumping of the rim and walls of Halemaʻumaʻu continues in response to ongoing subsidence at the summit.
6 a.m.: 1,015 Registered with FEMA
Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reports that Fissure 8 continues to erupt with a full channel flowing to the ocean in one major entry. Fissures 6, 15 and 16 continue producing minor spattering. Trade winds are forcasted to return today pushing vog to the southwest.
As of yesterday 1,015 people have registered with the Federal Emergency Management Agency for assistance either on line, by phone, or at the Disaster Recovery Center or DRC. Additionally the Small Business Administration has handled 329 service requests from homeowners and/or businesses at the DRC. These are among the many resources that are available to residents of Hawai‘i County who suffered damage or losses from the Kīlauea volcanic eruption and recent earthquakes:
- The DRC, is open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and is located at the Kea‘au High School Gym.
- The Hawai’i Dept. of Health is holding a Volcanic Ash and Vog Community Meetings today meeting at Waikoloa Elementary & Middle School Cafeteria beginning at 6 p.m.
