Reports of Downed Power Lines in Leilani Estates
Downed power lines have been spotted in the Leilani Estates subdivision and with some people returning to their homes to retrieve items, Hawai‘i Electric Light is warning residents to assume they are still energized and dangerous.
While the lava flow damaged poles and lines and cut electric service to parts of Leilani Estates after it was evacuated last week, electric service is still on to about half the subdivision.
“Everyone should treat lines, transformers and other utility equipment as energized even if the equipment is on the ground,” said company spokesperson Rhea Lee-Moku. “Until it’s safe for our employees, we won’t be making any inspections or repairs to equipment damaged by the lava flow and will only be entering the area to ensure the safety of first responders.”
Hawai‘i Electric Light has posted personnel in the area to assist if needed.
Stay at least three car lengths away from downed or low hanging power lines. Assume they are energized and dangerous. If you see someone injured after touching a downed power line, call 9-1-1 for help.
With the shutdown of the Puna Geothermal Venture plant, Hawai‘i Electric Light still has sufficient power generation available to meet the island’s needs. At this time, given the latest information about the eruption, there is no imminent threat to critical transmission infrastructure.
