Kalapana Charter School Closes Due to Consistent Quake Activity
In light of the consistent and strong earthquakes in the Kalapana area, Kua O Ka La Public Charter School in Kalapana will not be open on Wednesday, May 2, 2018, as a precautionary measure, according to School Leader Susie Osborne.
Students and families were notified of the closure this morning.
A 4.2-magnitude earthquake shook the Big Island Tuesday, May 1, at 5:20 a.m., but there was no tsunami threat to the state, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.
The earthquake struck about 12 miles southeast of Volcano around 2:45 a.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
There were no reports of any injuries or damage.
Hawaiian Volcano Observatory officials say they have noticed an increase in earthquakes at Kilauea’s east rift zone since 2 p.m. Monday, May 1.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, there have been 116 tremors in the last 24 hours as of May 2 at 7:15 a.m., 311 in the last week, and 728 in the last month.
A vast majority of the quakes were between magnitude 1 and 3, with only one, the 4.2 quake previouslsy mentioned, above 4.0 magnitude.
The last one recorded was a magnitude 2.7 quake at 7:02 a.m. this morning about 6 miles ESE of Leilani Estates.
There’s also been an increase in lava activity over the last few days.
Officials say they’re continuing to monitor the situation and plan to observe the area by helicopter on Tuesday morning as weather permits.
