Hāmākua Coast Crime Report: March 2018

Hawai‘i Police Department’s Hāmākua Coast Community Police responded to one burglary, eight thefts, two drug-related incidents, one assault, one vehicle theft and four criminal property damage incidents in March 2018.

There were no vehicle break-ins, sexual assaults or robberies (taking property of another with the intent to permanently deprive the person of that property, by means of force or fear) reported in this time frame.

The complete list of locations and incident details are as follows:

1 BURGLARY (entering of a building or residence with the intention to commit a theft or any felonious crime)

1. At a residence on Puakalo Street in Honoka‘a, the victim reported that an unknown suspect entered her residence through an unlocked back door where $2,500 in cash was taken and a mini iPad valued at $500.

2 DRUGS

1. At a business on Mamane Street in Honoka‘a, a baggie containing white crystals was found and tested positive for methamphetamine.
2. At a business on Pakalana Street in Honoka‘a, a 14-year-old boy was in possession of a half-smoked joint. The contents of the joint weighed in at .2 grams and tested positive for marijuana.

1 ASSAULT

1. At a business on Pakalana Street in Honoka‘a, a 16-year old female was in an altercation with 18-year-old female. The 18-year-old was pushed down some stairs by the 16-year old and struck in the face with a closed fist approximately 10 times, causing redness and swelling to the eye area and pain to her back and back of her left arm.

1 VEHICLE THEFT

1. At a residence on Ohai Street in Honoka‘a, a green 2004 Ford Expedition was removed without permission and later found set on fire on Cane Hall road in Paauilo.

4 CRIMINAL PROPERTY DAMAGE INCIDENTS

1. At a residence on Old Māmalahoa Highway in Ninole, an unknown suspect damaged a 6-foot fence post fronting his residence. Estimated value of the damaged fence post is $45.
2. At a residence under renovation on Kekoa Camp Loop in Papa‘aloa, an unknown suspect caused a circular crack on the window. The damage was possibly caused by a single shot BB. The estimated damage is $150.
3. At a residence located on Kekoa Camp Loop in Papa‘aloa, a 60-year-old man reported that the hood and windshield of his white 1999 Honda Accord, which was parked and unattended, was smashed with a cinder brick by 32-year-old woman. Estimated damage is unknown at this time. The man signed a waiver of prosecution after working out payment for the damages with the woman.
4. At a residence on Pa‘auilo Mauka Road in Honoka‘a, unknown suspect(s) cut a heavy-duty cable to the cattle gate. Estimated damage is $50.

8 THEFTS

1. On Highway 19 at the 30 mile marker in Laupahoehoe, an employee from state highways reported that an unknown suspect removed 20 gallons of diesel fuel from a grass mower that was parked and unattended on the shoulder. Estimated value of the fuel is $84.
2. At a residence on Laupahoehoe Point Road in Laupahoehoe, a 60-year-old man reported that $486 cash was removed from his dresser drawer without permission after he allowed 47-year-old man to change in his bedroom.
3. At a business on Hawai‘i Belt Road in Laupahoehoe, Alan GALLAP, 51, was arrested and charged for theft after he was observed by a store employee taking food items off of the shelves and place them in a black suitcase he had with him. The employee then observed him exit the store without paying for the items.
4. At a business on Mamane Street in Honoka‘a, an unknown suspect withdrew $200 from the victim’s bank account to an unknown debit account without permission.
5. At a business on Pakalana Street in Honoka‘a, a laptop was removed from a desktop without permission. The estimated value of the laptop is $200.
6. At a business on Pakalana Street in Honoka‘a, unknown suspects removed numerous items from a storage container—two buffers, a lawn mower, pressure washer, hammer and screws—without permission. Estimated value of the items taken is $2,200.
7. At a business on Hawai‘i Belt Road in Honoka‘a, a 41-year-old man, took a flash light without paying. The estimated value of the flashlight is $30.
8. An unregistered and unlicensed moped that was parked and unattended on Lehua Street in Honoka‘a was removed without permission. The moped is valued at $50.

REPORT CRIMES AS THEY OCCUR

With recent reports of suspicious vehicles in neighborhoods, theft of fruit and dogs attacking livestock, the police department is asking the public for help in reporting these incidences as they occur to the non-emergency dispatch number, (808) 935-3311, so police officers can respond.

HPD dispatch assigns officers to calls and create either a miscellaneous report or a criminal report that is documented with a date and time stamp and area of occurrence.

After doing so, the public can still inform their respective area Hāmākua Coast Community Police officer of the incident and provide the report number that was generated, for their information. The community police officers will then review the reports and try to determine a pattern with the information from the reports that are made.

If you get a license plate number and direction of travel and possibly a description of the occupants, call the non-emergency dispatch line at (808) 935-3311. Dispatch will send officers to the specified area to locate, identify and document their findings. If you are concerned of retaliation from reporting, you are still encouraged to make an anonymous report, which does not identify the caller.
