UPDATE 2: Flash Flood Watch Issued for Big Island

UPDATE 2: March 24, 9:50 a.m.

The National Weather Service continues the Flash Flood Watch for Hawai‘i Island.

A Flash Flood Watch means flooding is possible due to heavy rain from thunderstorms and strong winds. Winter weather conditions, including high winds are expected for the summit areas.

Due to the Flash Flood Watch, the following advisories are issued:

• Department of Parks and Recreation reports beach parks, community centers, swimming pools, pavilions and the Kalapana lava viewing area will remain closed today.
• Gymnasiums with scheduled events are open at this time.
• Police department reports all roads are open at this time.
• Because strong winds associated with thunderstorms may occur later today, take measures to secure items around your property that may be affected.

UPDATE: March 23, 2018,

The Flash Flood Watch is now in effect for the Big Island from Saturday morning through late Saturday night, Sunday, March 24.

A developing area of low pressure south of the state will spread deep moisture and unstable conditions across the Big Island.

Periods of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms may result in flash flooding.

Rapidly rising water levels may result on area streams and significant flooding may occur for low-lying and poor drainage areas.

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch for Hawai‘i Island.

A Flash Flood Watch means flooding is possible.

Heavy rain with possible thunderstorms and high winds are forecast from Saturday through Sunday, March 24 and 25, 2018.

Winter weather conditions for high elevations are also expected.

Due to the Flash Flood Watch, the following are issued:

Residents in flood-prone areas are advised to be on the alert for possible flooding conditions.

Motorists are advised to exercise caution while driving. Road closures may occur without notice.

Be on the alert for possible malfunction of traffic signals. Treat flashing traffic lights as a four-way stop.

Remember, if lightning does threaten your area, the safest place to be is indoors.

Expect possible interruptions in your utility services.

Take measures to secure items around your property that may be affected by strong winds. Complete all preparations before nightfall.

Consider canceling or postponing outdoor activities until conditions improve.
