Big Island to Celebrate 12th Annual Architecture Month

Free and low-cost 12th Annual Architecture Month activities on the Big Island will include events in communities across the island for design-minded adults and teens:

Kona Film Night, April 13

Award-winning film Dave Made a Maze (TV-14; one hour, 20 minutes) will be shown on Friday, April 13, 2-18, at 6 p.m. at the Donkey Mill Art Center at 78-6670 Māmalahoa Highway. The 2017 adventure-horror-comedy mash-up tells the story of Dave, a frustrated artist who has yet to accomplish anything significant in his career. He builds a fort out of cardboard boxes in his living room, only to wind up trapped by the fantastical pitfalls and critters of his own creation. Ignoring his warnings, Dave’s girlfriend, Annie, leads a band of oddball explorers on a rescue mission. Upon entry, they find themselves in an ever-changing supernatural world, threatened by booby traps and pursued by a bloodthirsty Minotaur.

Other works by the film’s director, Bill Watterson, include Ouija and Jersey Boys.

Waimea Film Night, April 19

Dave Made a Maze will be shown on Thursday, April 19, at 6 p.m. at the W.M. Keck Observatory Headquarters, Hualalai Learning Theater, 65-1120 Māmalahoa Highway.

No advance reservations are needed for the free film nights.

Kona TEEN: Architects Workshop, April 21

Students from grades six to 12 are invited to join the TEEN: Architects Workshop 2018 on Saturday, April 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Donkey Mill Art Center. Entitled “Cardboarditecture” from “cardboard” and “architecture,” the workshop will partner students with architects and art mentors to design and construct a temporary outdoor labyrinth to explore spatial and environmental relationships. $10 tuition per participant. Donkey Mill Art Center will provide the cardboard, cutting tools, paint and tape. Space is limited.

The Big Island events are part of a statewide celebration: The American Institute of Architects, Honolulu Chapter (AIA Honolulu) offers free and low-cost public events each April in celebration of Architecture Month in Hawai‘i.
