LETTER: Appalled to See Political Signs So Early

Surely many of you notice the political signs now appearing our roadways.

I was appalled to see the flourish so early – nearly six (6) months before the next primary.

Then we’ll have three (3) more months of these eyesores along our roads.

I called Ms. Poindexters office and complained on Monday past.

Her rebuttal was they’re legal.

What kind of leadership is that type of reply.

Certainly not one that considers the number of visitors who want to see the Big Island not this sort of blight.

Our county had a law allowing political signage to be put up 45 days prior to any election.

The State Attorney General at the time felt this was an improper law and it was gutted.

How about common-sense being used instead of law?

These huge banners are an eyesore and tell no-one anything about the candidates.

Not their thoughts about problems faced in the county nor their ability to do the job.

Some have already proven their total lack of ability.

The prove it by ignoring or not finding solution to long festering county problems.

Its time for the community to voice their disapproval or their support for this visual pollution.

No one should think running the visual landscape of our island is a political plus on their scorecard.

The state and county spends millions of dollars promoting Hawaii for its natural beauty.

It would be nice if our own council rep (who’s council chair) would learn to lead.

Make it a point to show she respects the idea of not polluting landscape with campaing signage so far in advance of any elections.

She could even draft a regulation, that would be enforceable, setting clear guidelines for this type of signage.

But that may be too much to ask of such a very busy person!
