Sumi-e Demo by Artist Ellen Crocker
The Kahilu Theatre, will present a free event, an Artist Demo and Gallery Walkthrough, on Saturday, March 3, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Artist Ellen Crocker will offer a free hands on demonstration of the art of Sumi-e also known as Japanese ink painting. The public is encouraged to participate and to bring an apron, or clothes that will be ok to get black ink on. All materials and equipment will be provided and all ages are welcome, including children age 5 and under with an adult.
This Kahilu Exhibits Artist Demo is being held in conjunction with CONFLUENCE EAST: Ellen Crocker & Cal Hashimoto, the current exhibition in the Kahilu Galleries, on view through Thursday, March 29. The exhibit showcases Crocker and the late Hashimoto, both of Hawaiʻi Island. The selected works at the Kahilu Theatre Galleries include sculpture, paintings and mixed media works that reflect the artistsʻ shared interest in the art disciplines of Japan. Hashimoto was widely recognized for his intricate explorations in bamboo sculpture. Crockerʻs work utilizes Sumi-e, (Japanese ink brush), watercolor, carving and Roketsu-zome (Japanese batik) to create mixed media paintings, art quilts and works on wood.
Crocker, is looking forward to the demo as a fantastic addition to her exhibition in the galleries, “I like introducing people to Sumi-e, it looks so simple but actually the simplicity is something you have to work at by learning to see, feel and draw. Sumi-e is more about capturing the mana of the subject, it is not photographic, it happens quickly, so one must see in your mind what you are painting.”
“One of our goals at Kahilu Theatre is to deliver exciting arts experiences to young and old alike, that reflect the diverse richness of our community,” says Sally Lundburg, Exhibits Coordinator of Kahilu Theatre. “Ellen Crocker is one of those rare teachers who has both deep technical abilities and experience along with great people skills. This is wonderful opportunity for our community to get a hands on experience with an accomplished artist!”
