Thunderstorm Notifcation for Hāmākua Coast

The National Weather Service has issued a Thunderstorm notification for the Hāmākua Coast. There is a strong possibility of thunder, lightening, high winds and hail with this storm. Consider unplugging appliances that are not in use. The best place to be is indoors. Report Power outages to HELCO at (808) 969-6666. For other emergencies dial 911.

At 1:17 p.m., a strong thunderstorm was located over Ninole, or 15 miles north of Hilo, moving east at 10 mph. Winds in excess of 40 mph and dime size hail are possible with this storm. Locations impacted include Nīnoole, Pepe‘ekeo, Laupāhoehoe, Honomū, Hakalau and Pāpa‘ikou.

Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm. Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle.
